Dye Eggs With Food Coloring Without Vinegar. If you don't have any vinegar in the house and you want to dye eggs, you can use a vinegar replacement, such as lemon juice or vitamin C powder. You can dye eggs year-round with regular food coloring and no vinegar.
Simmer for about half an hour. Turns out those little tabs were nothing but super condensed food coloring and it is just as easy to homemade easter egg dye as it is to buy the box. It really doesn't matter if eggs are warm or cold when dyeing.
Without going into all the science behind it, the short answer is that the added acid from the white vinegar brings it to the correct pH level needed for the dye to adhere to the egg shell.
You'll want to fill up a mug for each color, so get those prepared first!
